Central Bank net foreign assets fall in June after rate cut: Analysis
Aug 11 (EN) Net foreign reserves of SL’s central bank which have improved steadily for three years amid deflationary policy fell in June 2025, official data show, after a rate cut and strong recovery in private credit. Net foreign assets of the central bank, which deducts borrowings from India, the IMF and also reserves effectively borrowed through buy-sell swaps, fell to 424 billion rupees (about US$ 1,414 mil) in June, from 461 billion rupees (about 1,541 million) in May.

ITAK calls for hartal over alleged army killing in Mullaithivu
Aug 11 (NW) Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) has called for a hartal on Aug. 15 in the Northern and Eastern provinces to protest the alleged killing of a man by soldiers from the SL Army’s 63rd Division. In a letter to Prez Anura Kumara Dissanayake, ITAK General Secretary M.A. Sumanthiran said the body of Edirmanasingam Kabilraj, 32, was found in the Muttaiyankattu Tank on Aug. 9, two days after he and four others were reportedly summoned to the army camp and severely beaten.

Major gas stove racket bared
Aug 11 (DN) The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), acting on a tip-off, sealed a large-scale warehouse that was producing gas stoves with false labels meant for market release. Reports indicate that the company was assembling the gas stoves locally while labelling them as if they were imported from a foreign country and distributed here. Over 3,000 such gas stoves were found lying at the store. The warehouse was sealed following an order from the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court.

Forex from Lankans abroad surpasses US$4.4 billion
Aug 11 (ST) Multibillion-dollar remittances sent in by Sri Lankans working overseas, mostly domestic helpers and a small percentage of professionals, are reaching unprecedented levels. In the seven months to July, forex remittances of Sri Lankans have exceeded US$4.43 billion (Rs 1.32 trillion). The amounts from the same period in 2024 were US$3.71b. Aug 11 (DM) Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin revealed findings from the 2024 Auditor General’s report, released in May 2025, which stated that 139 vehicles registered under the Education Ministry Secretary’s name are not in the possession of the Ministry. Sri Lanka unemployment rate falls to 3.8% in 1Q 2025
Aug 11 (EN) SL’s unemployment rate fell to 3.8% in the first quarter of 2025, down from 4.5% a year ago and 4.2% in the December quarter. Total employed population rose to 8.13 million in the first quarter of 2025 from 7.90 last year, indicating the creation of about 237,912 jobs over the past 12 months. SL's unemployment rate rose to 5.2% in the second quarter of 2023, at the height of the island’s stabilization crisis, following the currency crisis and default in 2022.

History made: Parliament gives marching orders to IGP
Aug 12 (ST) History was made at the Tenth Parliament of SL on Tuesday when T.M.W. Deshabandu Tennakoon became the country’s first IGP to be removed by a parliamentary resolution.
