Govt launches concessionary loan scheme for paddy millers
June 30 (DM) Ministry of Finance has launched a Rs. 6.5 billion concessionary loan scheme for SME paddy millers and cooperative societies to purchase paddy during the 2025 Yala season, from July 1 to November 15. According to the Ministry, the scheme offers loans up to Rs. 50 million at a 7% annual interest rate, repayable within 180 days. It is aimed at entities with a maximum daily milling capacity of 25MT, holding valid business registrations and Paddy Marketing Board licenses.

Banking sector net foreign assets soar over 2,000%
June 30 (TM) SL’s banking sector net foreign assets have gained over 2,000% year-on-year (y-o-y) by April, mainly driven by the net foreign assets accumulated by the Central Bank. According to weekly indicators by the CB, net foreign assets in the banking sector stood at Rs. 1019.8 billion ($ 3.4 billion) by end of April as compared to the negative Rs. 52.9 billion ($ 180 million) in April last year, indicating a 2028.1% increase in rupee terms.

Treasury should buy its own dollars to settle debt and avoid second default
June 30 (EN) Now that SL’s central bank has made a pro-cyclical rate cut as private credit is recovering reminiscent of its actions in 2015, 2018 and second half of 2019, time has come for the govt to start taking counter action to reduce the risk of the next default. Single policy rate and the de facto abandoning of the scarce regime is a key risk to debt repayment or expecting the central bank to provide dollars for debt repayment. Safe water supply and sanitation: SL needs USD 7B investment to bridge gap: WBG
June 30 (CT) SL needs a USD 7 billion investment in safe water supply distribution and sanitation to close access gaps, reach 80 per cent coverage, and manage water pollution by 2030, World Bank Group (WBG) said. Sri Lanka inflation up 3.6% over 33 months, deflation over 12
June 30 (EN) SL’s consumer prices in the capital Colombo rose 3.6% over 33 months since monetary stability was restored around Sept 2022, though the index deflated 0.6% over 12 months. Colombo Consumer Price Index rose 0.9% in the month of June, after rising 0.8% in May driven by surging food prices, according to data from the DCS. The food sub-index grew 1.8% to 249.3 points in June, after rising 2.7% in May.

Rishi & helper caught trespassing in Ritigala
June 30 (DM) Two individuals who illegally entered the Kodigala Kanda area of the Ritigala Forest Reserve claiming to be a Rishi and his helper were rescued and arrested by officers of the Ritigala Wildlife Sanctuary Protection Office after becoming stranded in the forest.
