Netanyahu at UN: Lanka torn between walkout and staying put
Sep 28 (ST) The SL delegation to the UN General Assembly seems to have been caught this week between a rock and a hard place, as the saying goes. Sri Lanka reiterated its support for a state of Palestine but also has been coy about criticising Israel by name for the genocide being committed in Gaza by Israel. When the vast majority of the delegates from member states walked out in protest as Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu took to the rostrum to speak,

Reform or mutiny at the CEB?
Sep 28 (CT) The standoff between the Govt of SL and what I would call the union govt of the CEB is now entering its fourth week. The standoff has been created by the seemingly mutinous Engineers of the CEB against the govt’s restructuring of the institution and the electricity sector itself. The Sunday Island’s editorial last week called the standoff a game of chicken. In the game theory model of conflict between two parties, it is the union govt that seems to be chickening out.

Was it Change or Chance?
Sep 28 (CT) Even as Prez Anura Kumara Dissanayake has travelled to the US to celebrate the completion of his one year in office with a maiden address at the UNGA, more questions await him on return than possibly when he inherited power from a more cohesive dispensation under veteran predecessor, Ranil Wickremesinghe. No, it’s not about the lack of politico-administrative and, at times, political and parliamentary experience of his team members, but it is the sum total of what his Govt has delivered in the first year.

Sep 28 (TM) Prez Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD), who last week completed his first year in office without any pomp and pageantry, commenced his second year with two official overseas visits to New York and Japan. While President AKD and his Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP) Govt still has a long list of pledges to honour, the efforts made by the President to be inclusive and build strong relations with the international community are commendable.

The silent coup of State capture
Sep 28 (TM) In the noise and distraction of Sri Lanka’s daily political theatre, something far more sinister is unfolding quietly, stealthily, and dangerously. Beyond the headlines, beyond the carefully planted controversies that dominate evening talk shows and social media chatter, lies a seemingly calculated attempt to blur and ultimately erase the line between Govt and State. Sri Lanka, probably for the first time, is witnessing Govt excess of a new kind, one that is deeper, systematic,

Reforming the United Nations
Sep 28 (SO) Calls for reform of the United Nations (UN) are not new. For decades, the Global South has urged changes that would make the organisation more representative, more democratic, and more responsive to the needs of the majority of its Members. Yet, when United States (US) President Donald Trump and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb stood before the General Assembly in New York this week calling for sweeping reform, their demands echoed a very different agenda.

Perhaps the NPP regime suspects that for all the lip service its loyalists pay to the powers be, there is an emerging feeling of dissension at the state of the nation
